September 11

September 11

The attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC) as well as the Pentagon, as well as the bird that crashed inwards Pennsylvania on the forenoon of eleven September 2001 conduct keep brought forth a plethora of conspiracy theories, most of which arose exterior the United States of America of America as well as conduct keep exclusively piece of cake been gaining ground amid the U.S people.

In Muslim countries, many people directly doubted that Osama Bin Laden was behind the attacks, suggesting instead that they were a plot yesteryear the Bush direction to discredit Muslims as well as justify greater Blue Planet domination.

While non suspecting U.S. regime involvement, other Muslims stay unconvinced yesteryear the lean evidence of Osama Bin Laden's guilt. For instance, the opened upward missive of the alphabet entitled "How We Can Coexist" (May 2002) signed yesteryear Islamic scholars as well as intellectuals as well as addressed to the U.S. authors of the opened upward missive of the alphabet "What We're Fighting For" (February 2002) speaks openly of "alleged perpetrators."

as well as the bird that crashed inwards Pennsylvania on the forenoon of September 11 as well as the bird that crashed inwards Pennsylvania on the forenoon of September 11

But accusations of a plot yesteryear the U.S. regime are yesteryear no agency express to Muslim nations. Frenchman Thierry Meyssan states every bit much inwards L'Effroyable imposture (published inwards English linguistic communication every bit 9/11, The Big Lie) as well as the bird that crashed inwards Pennsylvania on the forenoon of September 11. He bases his suspicions amid other things on reports that several of the xix alleged hijackers are soundless alive.

He also doubts that flying 77 always flew into the Pentagon. The proposal that a bomb or missile—not a plane—hit the Pentagon has been gaining popularity, especially amongst the appearance on the Internet of numerous photos of the Pentagon that seem to belie the affect of a plane.

Meyssan's theory has been nether harsh criticism both inwards the United States of America of America as well as inwards France. One of his critics is compatriot Guillaume Dasquié, coauthor (with Jean Guisnel) of L'Effroyable mensonge (no English linguistic communication translation to date), which takes Meyssan to line on a number of messy details, such every bit the eyewitnesses of the crash at the Pentagon as well as the whereabouts of flying 77 as well as its passengers if in that place was no crash. Dasquié is perchance eager to disprove Meyssan because he has his ain conspiracy theory.

In Ben Laden: La Vérité interdite (published inwards English linguistic communication every bit Forbidden Truth) as well as the bird that crashed inwards Pennsylvania on the forenoon of September 11, coauthored amongst JeanCharles Brisard, the theory is that the Bush direction had already been planning to invade Transitional Islamic State of Afghanistan earlier September eleven to construct a natural gas pipeline as well as that it used the attacks every bit a front. Specifically, U.S. officials are said to conduct keep met amongst mediating Pakistani officials inwards July of 2001 to introduce an ultimatum to the Taliban: a carpet of gilded (the pipeline) or a carpet of bombs.

Dasquié as well as Brisard also signal out that both the Bush as well as Clinton administrations actively protected Bin Laden from investigations. For instance, FBI agent John O'Neill, who had been inwards accuse of investigating Bin Laden inwards the 1990s, quit his post out of frustration inwards the summertime of 2002 to become—ironically—security primary at the WTC.

He died trying to salve lives inwards the attack. O'Neill claimed he had been obstructed yesteryear colleagues trying to protect the fossil oil interests of the U.S. as well as Saudi Arabia, but the FBI claims that O'Neill was making likewise many enemies inwards the Arab world—and likewise many espionage mistakes.

In addition, Dasquié as well as Brisard document the failure of the United States of America of America to prosecute Osama Bin Laden as well as the bird that crashed inwards Pennsylvania on the forenoon of September 11: inwards March 1998, it was Libya's Gaddafi, non Clinton, who asked Interpol for the foremost international arrest warrant for Bin Laden. Gaddafi suspected fundamentalist Bin Laden of destabilizing Libya's moderate Muslim state—at the behest of the U.S. Interpol ignored the warrant, Dasquié as well as Brisard write. But fifty-fifty earlier that, inwards March 1996, the U.S. refused an offering yesteryear the regime of Sudan to extradite Osama Bin Laden to the United States.

The similar theory that the U.S. regime knew virtually the attacks beforehand as well as prepared to convey payoff of them politically rather than preclude them has been gaining to a greater extent than ground within the United States of America of America than the to a greater extent than far-fetched theory that the U.S. regime is itself responsible for the attacks (the planes that flew into the WTC would as well as thence conduct keep been remote-controlled).

While the quondam theory is far from proven, it at to the lowest degree seems to hold upward supported yesteryear 5 widely accepted facts: in that place were warnings of upcoming attacks from U.S. allies (such every bit French Republic as well as Egypt); the FBI itself had evidence but failed to "connect the dots"; the U.S. regime has a long history of supporting Bin Laden as well as the Taliban; the Bush household unit of measurement has a history of concern deals amongst the Bin Laden family; as well as the Bush direction was quick to brand political working capital missive of the alphabet of September 11, such every bit amongst the Patriot Act, which some claim was prepared inwards advance of the attacks.

Two websites conduct keep collected information as well as posed tough questions (almost all of which stay unanswered to date) without themselves aiming to formulate a unified conspiracy theory. One is Canada's Centre for Research on Globalization (particularly Michel Chossudovsky, writer of War as well as Globalization, the Truth behind 9/11), as well as the other is Germany's Telepolis (featuring inwards particular the travel of Mathias Bröckers). Bröckers describes himself every bit an "anti-conspiracy theorist," believing that Bush has no sentiment who is behind September eleven as well as thence invented the al Qaeda conspiracy to adjust his purposes.

The unanswered issues include: Why was a bird able to penetrate the world's most heavily guarded no-fly zone at all, much less 50 minutes after the foremost bird striking the WTC as well as lxxx minutes after air controllers reported it hijacked, which yesteryear police pull requires interceptor jets to hold upward scrambled? Why are 7 of the 8 flying recorders irreparably damaged, though they are made to withstand such crashes?

Why has the odd book of stock transactions (especially put-options) inwards the few days preceding eleven September 2001 non been traced dorsum to its sources? And why has no i investigated the payment of $100,000 to Mohammed Atta's concern human relationship inwards Florida from Pakistan's Ahmad Omar Sheikh on behalf of Lt-Gen Mahmud Ahmad, quondam manager of ISI (Pakistan's intelligence agency)?

The Times of India, which originally reported the transaction on nine Oct 2001, argued that a straight link betwixt the ISI as well as the WTC assail would hold upward of immense significance. Instead, researchers into September eleven note, non exclusively has this affair non been investigated, but in that place was also no refer of Omar Sheikh's role inwards the transactions when he was after industrial plant life guilty of murdering reporter Daniel Pearl as well as sentenced to death.

The listing of unanswered questions is much longer, but the key unanswered query for conspiracy theorists is probably: why did George W. Bush personally boundary investigations into all matters related to September eleven inwards Jan 2002? The official ground is that the available resources are to hold upward used to struggle the state of war on terrorism. But the Bush direction seems to hold upward good versed inwards withholding resources, showtime amongst its refusal to bring out papers relating to its connections to the Enron scandal. And inwards Oct 2002,

U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Bob Graham, a Florida Democrat who is privy to the express investigations into September 11, began calling for declassification of what he deemed to hold upward most of import information.

In belatedly Nov 2002, Bush appointed Henry Kissinger (himself a familiar figure inwards conspiracy theories) to caput the September eleven investigation commission, whose role according to the New York Times is to "help the direction larn the tactics as well as motives of the enemy," rather than to uncover mistakes on the business office of the regime or safety agencies that mightiness conduct keep prevented the attacks, a boundary that is much to the chagrin of the families of September eleven victims. Within 2 weeks, however, Kissinger resigned from the commission, citing potential conflict of interests amongst his populace relations work, details of which he was unwilling to bring out inwards the commons fashion.

At the fourth dimension of writing, major newspapers inwards the United States of America of America are total of reports virtually how September eleven could conduct keep been prevented. At the cease of Oct 2002, American ex-patriot novelist Gore Vidal published his conspiracy theory (in the British press) entitled "The Enemy Within," inwards which he points the finger at Bush Sr. as well as Jr. every bit good every bit Pakistan. But the most widely accepted "explanation" for September eleven within the United States of America of America is soundless sheer incompetence on the business office of U.S. intelligence.

Microsoft

Microsoft has repeatedly surfaced inward conspiracy lore, particularly amongst the increment of the Internet. Since its 1975 founding yesteryear Harvard dropout Bill Gates as well as his high-school friend Paul Allen, Microsoft has steadily occupied a larger as well as larger spell of the software market.

The company’s initial coup came amongst winning a contract for what eventually became MS-DOS, as well as hence arranging amongst IBM to operate out on the rights to the operating arrangement software. The introduction of Microsoft Office as well as Windows inward the early on 1990s cemented the company’s dominant manufacture position.

Soon subsequently September 11, an e-mail circulated alleging that Microsoft had built a undercover code into its Microsoft Word Wingdings font, predicting the attacks on the World Trade Center.

Microsoft has repeatedly surfaced inward conspiracy lore Microsoft Microsoft has repeatedly surfaced inward conspiracy lore Microsoft

When the characters Q33NY—incorrectly alleged to live on the flying number of i of the planes—are converted to Wingdings inward Microsoft Word, the effect is a plane, 2 symbols supposed to resemble buildings, a skull-and-crossbones, as well as a Star of David.

Influenza A virus subtype H5N1 similar rumor had surfaced before nearly the characters NYC, which allegedly had an antisemitic important when converted to Wingdings: a skull-and-crossbones, Star of David, as well as raised thumb.

In both cases, Microsoft had to number official statements denying the coincidence.

Microsoft has likewise been the discipline of government-spying fears (akin to those surrounding Inslaw’s alleged spy software, PROMIS) inward connectedness amongst a safety substitution built into its software. In September 1999, Andrew Fernandez, the primary scientist at a Canadian software work solid called Cryptonym, announced the beingness of an unaccounted-for safety substitution inward Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 5, mysteriously labeled “NSAKey.”

Rumors abounded on the Internet every bit to whether this was something Microsoft had built into Windows safety inward social club to let the National Security Agency (NSA) to spy on Windows users. The same rumor resurfaced inward 2002, amongst the unloose of the company’s Palladium safety initiative.

Microsoft has likewise been the discipline of much conspiracy parody, including articles claiming to link it to the Illuminati as well as numerogical analyses of Gates’s name. In 2002, Los Angeles filmmaker Brian Flemming released Nothing So Strange, a “mockumentary” that investigates a JFK-style conspiracy closed to the assassination of Bill Gates.

The celluloid alludes to names familiar from the Kennedy assassination, including Alex Hidell (one of Oswald’s aliases) as well as Debra Meagher (a reference to Sylvia Meagher, an early on researcher).

So what makes Microsoft a target for conspiracy theories? First, Gates’s monolithic presence, legendary competitiveness, as well as paranoia bring made him a nationally known figure on the scale of Nelson Rockefeller.

As the Justice Department investigation of Microsoft indicates, it is a large, successful enterprise that has non hesitated to utilization its success to expand its dominance. Within the technology industry, Microsoft has a reputation every bit a companionship that steals other companies’ ideas as well as turns them into mediocre simply wildly selling products.

Software companies similar Netscape, Norell, WordPerfect, as well as Lotus bring all felt the fiscal sting of competing amongst the behemoth based inward Redmond, Washington, as well as novel companies know that they bring alone a modest window inward which to succeed before Microsoft releases a competing product.

On the flip side, Microsoft itself has made accusations that its Justice Department prosecution results from collaboration betwixt Microsoft’s competitors, including Netscape (now purpose of AOL/Time Warner), Lord's Day Microsystems, as well as Oracle Corporation.

Militias

Although beingness armed inwards the U.S.A. is yesteryear no way a novelty Militias
citizens militias

Although beingness armed inwards the U.S.A. is yesteryear no way a novelty, during the early on 1990s the collection of marginalized groups that comprised the right-wing “Patriot” community found their ranks swelling equally meaning numbers of newly disaffected Americans joined “citizens militias” across the United States.

Strongest inwards the rural heartland of the West, Midwest, together with South, at its zenith inwards 1996 the motility had militias active inwards all l states together with numbered maybe equally many equally 50,000 members, with several millions of supporters together with sympathizers.

Some militia leaders have got claimed full membership figures equally high equally 10 million, which is frankly far fetched; federal agents have got suggested that supporters could number inwards the millions. Perhaps to a greater extent than realistically, others propose a full militia membership of betwixt 20,000 together with 60,000.

Although beingness armed inwards the U.S.A. is yesteryear no way a novelty Militias Although beingness armed inwards the U.S.A. is yesteryear no way a novelty Militias

Ostensibly defensive inwards posture, mobilizing inwards item against gun laws together with equally a defiant response to the federal outrages at Ruby Ridge (1992) together with at Waco (1993), the militia motility was remarkable together with unusual non entirely for claiming to endure socially inclusive, champaign able to recruit African Americans, Hispanics, Jews, together with middle-class professionals, but also for utilizing what some have got termed “fusion paranoia”—that is, conspiracy theories non just to the correct of the political spectrum, but also those incorporating the arguments to the left (Kelly). However, the view that the militia motility was progressive was sharply contradicted yesteryear many analysts.

One commentator saw the militias equally acting equally “recruiting pools” for the racist underground, pointing out that the same metro spawned Tim McVeigh, the Oklahoma City bomber. And equally early on equally 1994, the various “watchdog” organizations that monitor the activities of the far correct were raising the alert that racists together with antisemites were lurking inwards the background, disguising their truthful ideology behind constitutionalist arguments.

The “constitutionalist militias” that have got since acquire a permanent characteristic of the antigovernment motility are united entirely inwards price of their opposition to the “New World Order”—an elitist conspiracy to do a global socialist tyranny. The grade to which racism together with antisemitism dominate this coalition is highly questionable, together with it is the nature of conspiracy theories that holds the key to understanding the purpose together with significance of the militias.

What the Militias Believe

Can nosotros genuinely push clit the militias equally a movement? Arguably, the exercising of gun rights represents entirely a mutual strategy amid various groups (such equally survivalists; the advocates of mutual police who declare themselves “sovereign citizens”; militant antiabortionists; together with pro-gun activists), but this does non necessarily correspond a mutual ideology or set of principles.

Nonetheless, the term “militia movement” is widely used to refer to those who frame their activity inwards price of defending the U.S. Constitution, together with who fighting that the Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights (“A good regulated militia, beingness necessary to the security of a complimentary state, the correct of the people to maintain together with deport arms, shall non endure infringed”) is the 1 that guarantees all the other constitutional rights.

The entirely existent number some which the motility coheres is opposition to gun control, which is seen equally a precursor to “tyranny”. “The private correct to deport armed forces arms is a fundamental together with undergirding regulation of our Republic,” argues a prominent pro-militia journalist, together with therefore, he concludes, “upon its removal the entire national regime would acquire an illegitimate tyranny”.

The spirit of rebellion against gun laws is summed upward inwards the phrase, “You tin have got my gun when you lot pry it from my cold, dead hands,” together with it is the symbolic importance of the Second Amendment that guides the militia movement, tied into the ideology of nationalism: “This refusal to submit to tyranny is non simply close firearms. It is close human rights, it is close the dominion of law, together with it is close the continuance of this keen nation”.

How tin it endure that the militias, who nowadays themselves equally “Patriots” inwards defence forcefulness of U.S. values, are also “antigovernment”? This tin entirely endure answered yesteryear understanding the politics of nationalism. The FBI’s special study of 1999, Project Megiddo, which discussed the possibility of civil disorder at the start of the novel millennium, listed the next criteria equally a guideline for what constitutes a militia: “(1) a domestic organisation with ii or to a greater extent than members; (2) the organisation must possess together with usage firearms; together with (3) the organisation must deportment or encourage paramilitary training.”

Jon Roland, of the pro-militia Constitution Society, argues that this Definition is non the 1 implied inwards the U.S. Constitution, especially the Second Amendment, together with that “the discussion militia way defence forcefulness service, together with is applicable to whatsoever 1 or to a greater extent than persons engaged inwards the defence forcefulness of the community.” Roland cites George Mason, who defined the militia equally “the whole people, except for a few public officials,” together with he describes the FBI’s mentality inwards dealing with the militias equally “essentially fascist” (Roland).

This accusation—that federal employees together with “socialist” politicians such equally the Clintons are “fascists”—is a really mutual 1 inwards militia propaganda. By leveling this accuse at their enemies, militia leaders tin claim, sometimes with genuine conviction, to endure “antifascist,” thereby effectively preempting those on the left who themselves accuse that genuine fascists together with antisemites are influential inside the militias.

The website www.US-militia.org, for instance, describes those states with stringent gun laws equally “despicable together with fascist,” spell also stating, “If you lot are a racist, NAZI, KKK, aryan national, psycho or whatsoever other type of genetic freak; nosotros do non want you. We propose you lot locomote regard a psychiatrist or other mental wellness professional.” Nevertheless, despite this disclamation, the site contains a link to the seventh Missouri Militia—the most openly racist militia site, run yesteryear Martin Lindstedt.

In a similar vein, a pro-militia group, Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership, puts forrard an declaration that gun command has “racist roots” (because blacks inwards the South have got historically been denied the correct to gun ownership) together with that it is a precursor to “genocide.”

Therefore, yesteryear opposing gun laws the militias fighting that they are preventing the likelihood of genocide beingness carried out inwards the U.S.A. against whatsoever minority. Within this framework gun owners are depicted equally a victimized grouping denied their civil rights inwards much the same way equally nonwhites historically have got been denied theirs (www.JPFO.org is 1 of the most widely linked pro-gun sites from militia sites).

This mirrors the strategy of the Christian Right, who have got since the 1980s utilized the linguistic communication of “civil rights” inwards defence forcefulness of Christian values, together with have got employed conspiracy theories concerning “secular humanism”—portrayed equally a competition organized religious belief to Christianity.

Apart from “nationalism,” expressed equally the want to “save America,” at that spot is no guiding ideology behind a motility that to a greater extent than often than non denies beingness “antigovernment” at all—militias are simply opposed to “unconstitutional” government, their exponents claim. Widespread understanding exists amid militia members entirely that at that spot exists a conception to impose global tyranny, unremarkably referred to equally the New World Order. This is specifically a socialist conception for global domination.

Within this conception a cardinal purpose is played yesteryear the United Nations, which, it is claimed, volition usage unusual troops to disarm the U.S. public next the enactment of stringent gun-control measures, hence the importance non entirely of gun ownership, but also of preparation together with drilling inwards armed forces techniques together with marksmanship.

The “precipitating factors” that spurred the motility included the passage of the 1993 Brady Bill, which regulated the sale of handguns together with restricted ownership to nonfelons; the outlawing of “assault weapons” equally component of the Omnibus Crime Bill (1995), passed inwards the wake of the Oklahoma City bombing; the passage of international merchandise agreements such equally the Global Agreement on Trade together with Tariffs (GATT) together with North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which politicians such equally Patrick Buchanan said were causing U.S. jobs to endure exported to the Third World; together with ii events that indicated, from the Christian Patriot perspective, that the federal regime had declared state of war on its people: the botched sieges yesteryear federal agents at Ruby Ridge, Idaho, inwards 1992 together with and so again, to a greater extent than cataclysmically, at Waco, Texas, inwards 1993.

These events were interpreted equally proof that the New World Order was nearing completion. H5N1 Texan militia commander said of Waco, “We were sleep-walking through life. It was the massacre that woke us all up. When the history of this historic catamenia is written, that’ll endure the shot that rang out some the basis together with changed everything”.

Militia activists are widely characterized equally sharing a conspiracist outlook. Core beliefs include: that the New World Order volition require the usage of concentration camps for Christian resisters; that unmarked dark helicopters are beingness used yesteryear the armed forces inwards preparation for their plans; that unusual troops working for the UN volition endure used to disarm civilians together with imprison them; that international route signs are used inwards the U.S.A. inwards monastic say to help these unusual troops; that urban street gangs (such equally the Bloods together with Crips inwards Los Angeles) volition endure used equally “shock troops” for the New World Order; together with that implanted chips are beingness used to monitor U.S. citizens (a belief shared yesteryear Tim McVeigh).

The next elite groups are identified equally the instigators of the conspiracy: the Skull together with Bones cloak-and-dagger society, based at Yale University (of which the Bush theater unit of measurement are said to endure members); the Council on Foreign Relations; the Trilateral Commission (comprising economic, political, together with media elites from Western Europe, North America, together with Japan); the Bilderbergers; the Rockefeller together with Rothschild banking families; together with the British regal family. Many of these conspiracy theories are the same equally those of the John Birch Society, who label these elites “the Insiders.”

Although these elites include Americans, the conspiracy itself is specifically un-American, equally pointed out yesteryear Bo Gritz, speaking inwards 1992: “what nosotros regard are the tentacles of this elite club.... I holler upward the head, the brain, the guts of this affair likely lies offshore from the United States”.

This is a brief summary of some of the to a greater extent than mutual theories, which non all militia members volition believe. Another pop view is the proposition that UFOs have got made contact with human governments together with they are colluding with corrupt elites, equally advanced yesteryear William Cooper inwards Behold a Pale Horse, a volume that is both pop together with influential inwards militia circles (and which takes its championship from a line inwards the Book of Revelation 6: 8).

Some conspiracy theories are to a greater extent than mundane, relating to wellness issues such equally fluoride inwards H2O supplies, or the belief that high schoolhouse shootings are caused yesteryear giving the drug Ritalin to children. It is belief inwards conspiracies that informs all resistance from the far right, framed inwards opposition to the left. Unanimity is non required, simply the identification of mutual enemies—the enemies of the nation.

Militia together with Patriot publications together with websites also nowadays an economical analysis, inwards which the Federal Reserve is depicted equally a corrupt body, backed yesteryear private banking interests, overseeing a monetary scheme based upon usury together with fictitious capital.

There is a considerable crossover into the revenue enhancement protest/resistance constituency of Patriots who believe that the payment of income tax—which was introduced illegally inwards 1912, it is argued—is genuinely voluntary together with non a compulsory obligation.

By refusing to cooperate with the Inland Revenue Service (IRS), Patriots believe that they are striking a blow against the New World Order. By declaring themselves “sovereign citizens” many believe that they tin legally evade income tax, so long equally they larn “common law” good plenty to refute the erroneous arguments of IRS officials inwards court.

Predictably, run-ins with the IRS have got resulted inwards many would-be Patriots becoming incarcerated or fined, equally their mutual police argu- ments have got failed to win out inwards court. Thus “tax resisters” often acquire available for recruitment to the far right, equally was the instance with Robert Mathews of The Order, for instance.

In militia publications together with websites, comparisons are commonly made with the province of affairs when America was a British colony, ruled yesteryear King George III, which resulted inwards the American Revolution together with the overthrow of colonial rule.

This comparing legitimizes resistance against corrupt federal authority, summed upward inwards the oft-repeated quote from Ben Franklin, “They that would surrender essential freedom for a picayune temporary security deserve neither freedom nor safety.”

The vast bulk of militia websites together with publications, it should endure emphasized, limited entirely the utmost loyalty to the U.S. Constitution, which they experience is nether threat from traitorous enemies, together with they disavow both racism together with violence.

It is apparent that the militias’ typical stance, beingness 1 of rebellion together with distrust of mainstream politics together with culture, leads many to come upward into conflict with police enforcement agencies, together with the Militia Watchdog website provides a lengthy litany of militia members together with leaders who have got been arrested together with charged with crimes ranging from firearms offenses, revenue enhancement evasion, together with civil disobedience (such equally driving without a valid driver’s license), to to a greater extent than serious ones such equally conspiracy to blow upward federal buildings.

In some cases, such equally that of the Arizona Viper Militia, the leading protagonists inwards a conspiracy to brand bombs turned out to endure undercover federal agents (eleven out of the twelve who were arrested inwards 1996 eventually received prison theater sentences).

Impact of September 11

Prior to the terrorist attacks of 11 September Mark Pitcavage believed that the militia motility “has sure enough declined, but it is non inwards danger of disappearing, together with inwards fact inwards many parts of the province it is silent really strong. In some parts of the country, where militia arrests set it depression (such equally West Virginia together with Georgia), it is reforming.”

He also mentioned the “reflowering” of the revenue enhancement protestation motility together with the increment inwards popularity of the “redemption” tactic of mutual police adherents (a type of fiscal scam), “active inwards virtually every unmarried state”. Militias were also able to mobilize supporters for lengthy standoffs with police enforcement agencies inwards both Indiana together with Texas during 2000–2001, at the Indianapolis Baptist Church together with the Joel Grey farm, respectively.

Taking the “antigovernment movement” equally a whole, of which the militias are but a part, Pitcavage concluded that it “has existed inwards to a greater extent than or less its nowadays shape since the early on 1970s together with nobody’s managed to postage stamp it out yet. I doubtfulness it is dead correct now.”

However, since 11 September the militias have got been somewhat eclipsed yesteryear the moving ridge of patriotism that has swept the United States, coupled with the potent back upward for President Bush together with the federal government’s “war on terrorism.” Militia websites have got adapted their rhetoric, arguing that terrorism stands with socialism, liberalism, together with communism equally threats to U.S. values together with prosperity.

The lesson for the gun lobby—the middle of gravity for the militias—was that the airplane hijackings could have got been avoided if air passengers were allowed to send guns on board flights: “only self defence forcefulness yesteryear the ‘unorganized militia’ volition endure available when domestic or unusual terrorists withdraw their side yesteryear side minute of murder. And hither is the public-policy implication of this fact: It would endure improve if the militia were to a greater extent than prepared to human activity when it is needed”.

The passengers who fought against the hijackers on Flight 93, which came downwards inwards rural Pennsylvania, it is argued, were effectively acting equally a citizens’ militia. Individualized security—the correct of the citizen to deport arms together with shape militias—is held equally the ideal, contrasted with whatsoever notion of collectivized security arrangements carried out yesteryear the province inwards conjunction with the disarming of civilians, which remains anathema to the Right inwards the United States.

It is clear, however, that militia appeals have got lost a grade of salience equally a resultant of 11 September, equally at that spot is 1 time again an external enemy taking on a similar purpose to that of international communism during the mutual frigidness war. As Norm Olson set it, “I don’t want anyone to have got the thought that we’re going to bow downwards to the federal government, but I holler upward this could endure a novel beginning.... As long equally at that spot is a unusual enemy, nosotros volition run together with our federal government. George Bush’s enemy is my enemy”.

Nevertheless, given the nature of conspiracist thinking, it is clear that many volition endure resistant to appeals to back upward the federal government, together with volition regard 11 September equally a planned event, component of the conspiracy—as does the Freedom Fighter Net, linked from the Michigan Militia site: “As Franklin Delano Roosevelt is quoted equally saying: ‘Nothing always happens inwards international politics that isn’t planned.’ Our leaders may non have got a clue what is genuinely going on here, but these attacks have got New World Order together with One World Government written all over them.”

Hidden Agendas?

The pro-militia publication the Patriot Report (run yesteryear Christian Identity adherent George Eaton, out of Arkansas) argued that the militias formed inwards the 1990s equally a defensive response to “when the socialist alter agents began making offensive moves against the U.S. Constitution together with American sovereignty.... the entirely affair standing inwards the conspirators’ way of full basis conquest,” he continued, “was the few American patriots who silent believe inwards the constitutional American Republic.... It was aggressive together with offensive moves yesteryear the conspirators for a One World Government that caused the patriot community to recognize tyranny together with and so to shape militias.... The militias are defensive, non offensive or revolutionary”.

Nevertheless, “watchdog” organizations, such equally the ADL together with the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), together with some activists fighting that the militias harbor hidden agendas together with that racists together with antisemites have got played influential roles inwards the formation of the militia movement. They farther fighting that the “Patriots” who brand upward the mass of the membership constituted “the seedbed, if non the realization, of a uniquely American variety of fascism”.

Morris Dees (of Klanwatch—part of the SPLC that Dees heads) describes John Trochmann, founder of the Militia of Montana, equally “a frequent visitor to the neo-Nazi Aryan Nations,” champaign indicating guilt yesteryear association. In Dees’s volume Gathering Storm: America’s Militia Threat, he links the militias direct with Tim McVeigh (the Oklahoma City bomber), suggesting that the motility “led to the most destructive human activity of domestic terrorism” inwards U.S. history upward until that point.

Dees stated inwards a missive of the alphabet to the together with so U.S. attorney general, Janet Reno: “Our business office has confirmed the active involvement of a number of well-known white supremacists, Posse Comitatus, Christian Identity, together with other extremist leaders together with groups inwards the growing militia movement”. These included established far-right leaders such equally Louis Beam (ex–Ku Klux Klan Grand Dragon), Bo Gritz (“a notorious antisemite”), together with James Wickstrom (a Posse Comitatus leader).

In making the instance for the involvement of far-right activists, Dees is non lonely inwards ascribing a coming together that took house inwards Oct 1992 at Estes Park, Colorado, equally a sort of planning coming together for the formation of the militias. Known equally the “Rocky Mountain Rendezvous,” it brought together over 150 far-right leaders, including Richard Butler of Aryan Nations, Red Beckman of the Fully Informed Jury Association, together with Larry Pratt, founder of Gun Owners of America, who represented the militant fly of the pro-gun lobby.

The event, which was organized yesteryear Pete Peters largely inwards response to the Ruby Ridge siege that had taken house before inwards the year, featured a keynote spoken language yesteryear Louis Beam inwards which he outlined the “leaderless resistance” strategy, based upon cellular, decentralized structures champaign similar to those employed yesteryear the “Committees of Correspondence” during the American Revolution.

In the article of the same holler that explains “Leaderless Resistance,” originally written inwards 1983, Beam advocates various ways inwards which “those who honey our race, culture, together with heritage” tin resist “federal tyranny,” which he regards equally having replaced the threat of communism inwards the United States.

Strategies include utilizing “camouflage,” yesteryear which Beam way “the powerfulness to blend inwards the public’s oculus the to a greater extent than committed groups of resistance with mainstream ‘kosher’ associations that are to a greater extent than often than non seen equally harmless.”

In other words, racists should involve themselves inwards groups through beingness disingenuous close their truthful ideology. With this inwards mind, it is clear that it would endure impossible to evidence that racists together with antisemites are dominant inside the militias, but at the same fourth dimension it is a fair supposition that at that spot are at to the lowest degree some present.

Nevertheless, the purpose of racists should non endure overstated. Mark Pitcavage believes that Estes Park was non peculiarly relevant to the evolution of the militia motility together with that “most militia leaders never fifty-fifty heard of it.” Representatives of both the SPLC together with ADL are agreed that the militia motility is non mainly characterized yesteryear racism.

Martin Durham argues, “Rather than regard Estes Park equally the origin of the modern militias it would seem to a greater extent than useful to regard it equally 1 of many Patriot initiatives that anticipated, but entirely inwards some cases influenced, the emergence of a novel moving ridge of paramilitary groups inwards 1994”. He concludes that far to a greater extent than emphasis should endure given to the purpose of the militant pro-gun lobby, including the National Rifle Association, but to a greater extent than significantly a competition group, the Gun Owners of America (headed yesteryear Larry Pratt).

For some, it is the belief inwards conspiracy theories that is regarded equally proof plenty that the militias harbor racist sentiments: “This electrical flow crop of conspiracy theories is written on a template forged long agone together with reshaped yesteryear successive tales of cloak-and-dagger worldwide conspiracies”. The declaration is that the inwards a higher house theories tin endure traced dorsum to antisemitic conspiracy theories, based on the model of Protocols of the Elders of Zion, a forged occupation concern human relationship of Jewish plans for global domination.

But this is to overlook the overwhelming religiosity of the movement. Other commentators have got drawn attending to what they regard equally the leading purpose of Christian “reconstructionists” together with antiabortion radicals (often with links to white-supremacist theologies).

But at that spot is far to a greater extent than consensus that it was Pat Robertson’s 1991 bestseller, The New World Order, that did most to pave the way for the militias. It both popularized together with brought together secular together with religious conspiracy theories inwards a unmarried overarching analysis that labeled the conspirators equally motivated yesteryear absolute evil (McLemee).

Robertson specifically rules out blaming “monopoly capitalism” for the problems of the world—there is “some other powerfulness at work.” He identifies the “policy elites” who are attempting to dominate the basis together with concludes that such impulses bound “from the depth of something that is evil, neither good intentioned nor benevolent”.

There is no overt racism or antisemitism inwards the book, however, although Robertson took considerable flak for his determination to utilize antisemitic sources—he included references to both Eustace Mullins together with Nesta Webster, for example.

Rather than demonizing the militias equally racist conspiracies guided yesteryear antisemitism, Mark Fenster argues that they are improve understood if the of import modern purpose of “popular eschatology” is emphasized: that is, the do of reading together with interpreting both history together with contemporary events equally the signs foretold inwards the Bible, mediated to a mass marketplace of Christians (hence pop eschatology).

The Book of Revelation is peculiarly significant, speaking of “fire together with smoke together with brimstone”; the number of the Beast (666); the 4 horsemen of the Apocalypse; the vehement devastation of Babylon together with the slaying of a 3rd of the human population; the lx minutes of judgment; Armageddon; together with so on. Rather than preparing for a race war, Fenster feels that militia members are to a greater extent than probable to endure preparing to fighting it out with the Antichrist, assisting the forces of Christ inwards the concluding showdown at Armageddon.

Popular eschatology is based upon a “mechanistic theory of powerfulness ... [which] echoes, together with at times explicitly borrows, the theories of to a greater extent than secular right-wing conspiracy theories,” but they are non the same thing. Although the lines betwixt religious together with secular conspiracy theories are blurred, “they each emerge from distinct, if at times overlapping, social together with cultural contexts” (Fenster, 147).

It is, therefore, the deviation betwixt conservative Protestantism on the 1 hand, together with modernist/liberal Protestantism on the other, that holds the key to understanding pop eschatology, which is deeply traditionalist together with pious. The militias correspond the backlash politics of conservative Protestantism, reacting against the domination of “secular humanism” together with the (immoral) liberal consensus that prevails inwards contemporary America.

There are concerns that militias purpose equally “bridges,” facilitating the motility of Christian conservatives toward the far right, equally they encounter the secular conspiracy theories of the Christian Right together with the John Birch Society, whose tracts are widely available on militia sites, together with and so acquire susceptible to the to a greater extent than unsafe extremism of antisemites, whose sites are far less often linked (Barkun).

Similarly, Ken Stern (107) uses the notion of “funnels” to push clit the way that the motility takes people inwards over concerns over a broad gain of issues, such equally gun command together with environmental restrictions, together with and so when they acquire to the extremist heart of the funnel they emerge equally antisemites, equally did Tim McVeigh.

Militias also correspond really existent economical interests, such equally gun manufacturers who usage patriotism to boost sales together with who promote gun ownership equally the antidote to private insecurity; anti-environmentalists who back upward the rights of loggers together with mining interests over the efforts yesteryear Greens to limit the usage of natural resources together with to protect wildernesses; together with complimentary marketplace libertarians whose master copy concern is with maintaining a vibrant civilisation of antitax militancy together with antigovernmentalism.

These various interests limited no back upward for racism or antisemitism, but because they employ the myths of nationalism together with have got a dialectical human relationship with the same caricatured versions of their ideological enemies—liberalism together with socialism—then they also have got to fighting with the racists inwards their midst who regard the patch equally an ethnically based entity (belonging to white Europeans) rather than a values-based 1 (of which all immigrants tin acquire a part). As far equally militias are concerned, it is the political Left that has the hidden agenda (the eventual creation of communism), which volition resultant inwards the enslavement of all nations.

The militias are ideologically “slippery,” together with thence able to recruit beyond the traditional “Christian Patriot” base of operations of support, exactly because they have got no demand to endure opened upward together with unambiguous close what they genuinely believe in. They correspond symbolic resistance to globalization, multiculturalism, together with province power, often reflecting cultural chauvinism, but for every racist militia at that spot is at to the lowest degree 1 libertarian one.

They are a crusade for concern for police enforcement agencies because, equally Mark Pitcavage puts it, “they have got the tools for violence coupled with an ideology inwards which violence is non entirely permissible but if used for the correct ends, admirable.” By refusing to specify what the ultimate ends mightiness endure they are hoping to displace beyond the fringes together with into the mainstream.

Al-Qaeda

is
Al-Qaeda

Al-Qaeda (Arabic for "the base") is a worldwide Sunni Islamist militant insurgent group. Founded by Osama bin Laden in 1988 in Afghanistan, al-Qaeda is now dedicated to driving the United States out of the Middle East specifically and out of Muslim countries generally, to destroying Israel, and to toppling pro-Western governments in Islamic countries and replacing them with Islamic fundamentalist governments.

These three goals lead to the organization’s ultimate goal, which is the reestablishment of the caliphate, a nation uniting Muslims and spanning the Islamic world.

The organization is believed to be highly redundant, both financially and operationally. While the various cells that make up the organization are accountable to higher-level leadership, operations appear to be left to the individual cells, while higher levels provide material and logistical support.

isis

Ideas and targets coming from the upper echelons filter down to the individual cells responsible for coordinating and executing the attacks. This redundancy increases the organization’s resiliency; when cells are destroyed or captured, the losses can be contained more effectively than if al-Qaeda were a more linear organization.

Al-Qaeda’s training camps are likewise well organized. The extent of the training and organization is best seen in the group’s multivolume Encyclopedia of Jihad. Several thousand pages in length, the encyclopedia details the bureaucratic workings of the group.

Covered topics include guerrilla warfare, assembling booby traps, tactics for fighting against armored or aerial combat units, urban warfare, intelligence security, data gathering, and chemical weapons tactics.

The group has been linked to or accused of taking part in terrorist acts across the globe beginning in the early 1990s. A list of the attacks against U.S. interests attributed to al-Qaeda includes the 1992 hotel bombings in Aden, Yemen; the February 6, 1993, bombing of the World Trade Center in New York City; attacks carried out on U.S. military forces in Somalia in 1993 and 1994; the June 25, 1996, truck bombing of the Khobar Towers residential compound in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia; the near-simultaneous bombings of U.S. embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on August 7, 1998; the suicide bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen on October 12, 2000; and the September 11, 2001, airline hijackings and attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center.

The United States is not the group’s only target, however. Al-Qaeda also is linked to the April 2002 bombing of the El Ghriba synagogue in Tunisia; the October 2002 nightclub bombing in Bali, Indonesia; the November 2003 bombings of synagogues and a British bank in Istanbul, Turkey; the March 11, 2004, train bombings in Madrid, Spain; and the July 7, 2005, London transit bombings.

Al-Qaeda is most often represented and understood in regard to its founder, Osama bin Laden (aka Abu Abdallah). Bin Laden was born in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on March 10, 1957. When he was six months old, his father, Muhammad bin Laden, the Yemeni immigrant who established the Saudi Binladin Group, relocated to Jeddah, where Osama grew up.

The Soviet Union’s December 1979 invasion of Afghanistan galvanized the Muslim world in defense of Afghanistan and provided the West with a proxy war through which to combat the Soviet Union. Bin Laden, who had studied economics at King Abdul Aziz University in Jeddah, was one of many spurred to action in defense of Afghanistan.

He made his first trip to neighboring Pakistan in 1980, where he sought ways to contribute to the jihad. Bin Laden made several monetary contributions to the mujahideen, but quickly began looking for other ways to contribute.

Bin Laden joined with Palestinian cleric Abdullah Azzam to found the Services Bureau (Makhtab al-Khidimat, or MAK) in Pakistan in 1984. Azzam, who had taught at King Abdul Aziz University while bin Laden studied there, was indispensable in recruiting.

In addition to providing relief to war victims in Afghanistan, the MAK organized and coordinated the volunteers, donations, and weapons coming into Pakistan and Afghanistan in support of the jihad.

Azzam believed that the young Arab men streaming to Pakistan to participate in the jihad should be scattered among the Afghan functions. Azzam felt that such a mixing of Arabs among the local forces would reap benefits both in Afghanistan and abroad.

Bin Laden saw the situation differently and sought to create his own separate Arab fighting force. He believed that such a force would be a superior fighting unit compared to local Afghan forces. Bin Laden broke with Azzam and established training camps for his Arab force near Jaji, in eastern Afghanistan.

From this base, which they dubbed al-Masadah (the Lion’s Den), bin Laden’s "Arab Afghans" engaged the Soviets in the battle of Jaji in the spring of 1987. It was at this time that bin Laden grew closer to the Egyptian Islamic Jihad (EIJ) and one of its most prominent members, Ayman al Zawahiri, who would become bin Laden’s deputy in al-Qaeda.

When the Soviets announced their planned withdrawal in April 1988, bin Laden began preparations to perpetuate and expand his forces. He began by moving his unit to the area around Jalalabad, Afghanistan, which became known as al-Qaeda; bin Laden would later say that the name remained with the group by accident. Following the Soviet withdrawal in 1989, bin Laden returned to Saudi Arabia.

When Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait on August 2, 1990, bin Laden, who had consistently expressed his contempt for the "atheist" Hussein and his Ba’athist government, approached the Saudi king with a plan to use his Arab Afghans to drive Hussein’s forces from Kuwait.

The Saudi government sought to restrict his movements within the kingdom. Bin Laden obtained permission in early 1991 to travel to Pakistan on the pretext of checking in on some business interests and never returned to Saudi Arabia.

In early 1992 bin Laden and al-Qaeda moved to Sudan, where they remained until 1996. Al-Qaeda and the National Islamic Front (NIF), the ruling party in Sudan, enjoyed a symbiotic relationship.

The NIF granted al-Qaeda a safe haven and freedom of movement, while bin Laden made substantial investments in Sudanese industry and agriculture and undertook several large-scale construction projects to develop the infrastructure and agricultural and industrial production capacity of Sudan.

While in the Sudan, bin Laden directed his forces in actions against the communist government of South Yemen. The Arab Afghans also were sent to Bosnia, where they had a substantial impact on that conflict. Bin Laden dispatched al-Qaeda forces into Somalia in response to the buildup of U.S. forces.

In December 1992 President George H. W. Bush sent 28,000 U.S. troops into Somalia on a humanitarian mission in support of United Nations (UN) relief efforts. Bin Laden and al-Qaeda dismissed all humanitarian claims and interpreted the U.S. presence as a way of putting pressure on Islamic regimes and as an effort to establish another base from which to attack Muslim nations.

Al-Qaeda regarded Yemen as a major victory. First, even though the hotels bombed in Yemen did not house U.S. personnel, the transfer of U.S. troops out of Yemen shortly after the hotel bombings indicated to al-Qaeda that they had been successful in driving the Americans from Yemen.

Bin Laden also claimed that the militarily superior U.S. forces were driven from Somalia by a poor, ill-armed people whose only strength was their faith. In his 1996 aliran declaring war against the United States, bin Laden claimed that the most important lesson to be learned from Somalia was that the United States would flee at the first sign of resistance.

The year 1994 was a watershed for bin Laden. He survived two assassination attempts and in April was stripped of his Saudi citizenship in response to the growing threat he represented to the regime.

A jawaban step in his radicalization came in August, when the Saudi government imprisoned clerics Salman al Awdah and Safar al Hawali, who were among the first and most prominent of the clerics circulating cassettes of their sermons against the continued U.S. presence in the Arabian Peninsula, and whose imprisonment bin Laden would later mention in his 1996 fatwa.

Bin Laden and al-Qaeda left Sudan in 1996 and returned to Afghanistan, a move prompted by several factors. In addition to the assassination attempts, bin Laden faced international pressure on the NIF and its de facto leader, Hassan al-Turabi.

The United States and Saudi Arabia sought to have bin Laden silenced and his activities curtailed, and al-Turabi found it increasingly difficult to maneuver and protect bin Laden.

When Sudan started pressuring bin Laden, he returned to Jalalabad. There bin Laden and al-Qaeda entered into a symbiotic relationship with the Taliban ("the students"), who were in the process of consolidating their control over much of the country.

This relationship was similar to that with the NIF in Sudan; bin Laden and his organization gained considerable freedom of movement and protection, while his benefactors benefited from agricultural, infrastructural, and industrial investment and development.

It was during the period between bin Laden’s return to Afghanistan and the 1998 aliran that civilians became targets. Both the 1996 aliran and bin Laden’s 1997 CNN interview spoke of civilians as collateral damage, not as legitimate targets in and of themselves.

By 1998 this had changed, and the aliran issued February 22, 1998, explicitly stated that Americans and their allies, civilians and military alike, were now al-Qaeda targets anywhere they could be found.

Communications from al-Qaeda repeatedly stress their belief that Western governments oppress Muslims and Muslim nations and are engaged in a war against Islam. Bin Laden describes the presence of U.S. forces in "the Land of the Two Holy Places" (Saudi Arabia) as the greatest insult and threat faced by the Islamic world since Muhammad’s lifetime.

In addition to decrying U.S. support for Israel, the group condemns U.S. support for what it considers "apostate regimes", particularly Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Bin Laden also points to the sanctions imposed on Iraq following the Gulf War as one reason to reject any human rights arguments coming from the West.

Al-Qaeda’s idea of the ummah (community of believers; the Islamic world) in opposition to the world derives from the teachings of two prominent Islamic scholars.

Ibn Taymiyyah (1263–1328) was a 14th-century Islamic scholar who taught that jihad is the duty of each individual Muslim when Islam is attacked, that the Qu’ran should be interpreted literally, and that all Muslims should read the Qu’ran and Hadith (the sayings of the Prophet) for themselves and not rely on a learned clergy. A second influence on al-Qaeda was Sayyid Qutb (1906–66), an Islamist associated with the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood.

Describing the world as existing between states of belief (Islam) and unbelief (jahiliyya), Qutb condemned Western and Christian civilization. Urging jihad against all enemies of Islam, Qutb believed that there is no middle ground and that all Muslims must take to jihad when Islam is threatened.

These influences are apparent in al-Qaeda’s activities and rhetoric. Bin Laden believes that since the Christians, Jews, and Hindus have nuclear weapons, it is only fitting that Muslims obtain them as well.

Bin Laden also echoes Ibn Taymiyyah in his assertions that the Saudi government is aiding the "crusaders" in plundering the wealth of the ummah, the vast Middle Eastern oil reserves, and by acting to keep oil prices below fair-market value.

Al-Qaeda’s leadership cadre is well educated. Bin Laden has a university degree in economics, and his inner circle contains doctors; agricultural, civil, and electrical engineers; and computer scientists, but no religious scholars.

Rahman’s aliran echoed the call to attack the United States and its allies—civilian and military, anywhere in the world—and contained exhortations to sink ships, shoot down airplanes, and burn corporations and businesses.

Two separate attacks on U.S. warships were made in subsequent years, with the USS Cole attack following an unsuccessful attack on the USS The Sullivans one year earlier. On September 11, 2001, the plot masterminded by Ramzi Binalshibh and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who were arrested in Pakistan in 2002 and 2003, respectively, proceeded along the lines of Rahman’s fatwa.

Pedro de Valdivia

Pedro de Valdivia
Pedro de Valdivia

Pedro de Valdivia, a Spanish conquistador, is best known as the conqueror of Chile. He was born about 1500 at La Serena, Estremadura, Spain. He joined the Spanish army at a time of near constant warfare in Europe.

As a soldier in the army of Charles V of Spain, Valdivia fought for the Habsburg empire in the Italian Wars. He saw action at Flanders and at Pavia in 1525.

The Battle of Pavia is particularly notable as the first major modern battle, illustrating the shift from knights in armor and crossbowmen to cannoneers.

Valdivia went to the New World in 1535. He took part in the prolonged conquest of Venezuela and then joined Francisco Pizarro, the conqueror of Peru, in 1532. Conspicuous among the conquistadores for his learning and conceit, Valdivia became the most distinguished officer and the highest in rank in Pizarro’s government. He commanded Pizarro’s forces at the 1538 Battle of Las Salinas, a struggle between Pizarro and other conquistadores for control of the city of Cuzco.

Pizarro was a notoriously difficult man to the point where he was eventually assassinated by his fellow Spaniards, but Valdivia displayed an ability to get along with the conqueror and became his favorite. He received the title maestro del campo, or chief officer of staff, and appeared set for a prosperous life in Peru. However Valdivia had an ambitious nature. He wanted both an independent position and a territory of his own.

He picked Chile for reasons that baffled the other Spaniards. Chile had such a bad reputation after the failed expedition of Diego de Almagro that public opinion in Peru held that the land could not feed 50 Spaniards; there was no wealth to be had in Chile. Nevertheless, Valdivia sought Pizarro’s support to explore and conquer the land. In exchange, he surrendered his valuable encomienda and a silver mine at Porco.

In 1539, Pizarro named Valdivia as lieutenant governor of Chile and Valdivia set out to claim his territory. Valdivia had great trouble recruiting men to accompany him in part because he possessed little property. The commander of an expedition in this abad had to pay all the expenses involved with the movement of troops.

Since Valdivia had little money, he could afford only a small force. He left Cuzco in January 1540 with betweeen five and 20 Spanish soldiers, his mistress Inés de Suárez, and a Native American auxiliary force of about 1,000 men. Along the route to Arequipa, other Spaniards joined him.

At Tarapacá, Valdivia waited for additional reinforcements, but when the army finally set out across the wheat; domestic animals, especially pigs and fowl; and a collection of agricultural implements.

After 11 months of hardship, skirmishes with Indians, and internal conflicts, Valdivia’s forces arrived in the valley of the Mapocho. Almost immediately they were attacked by an Indian army led by the local chief, Michimalonco.

The Spaniards eventually drove off the Indian warriors. At Copiapó, seven months after Valdivia’s journey had begun, he took possession of Chile in the name of the Spanish Crown. Soon after, he convinced the local Indians to aid in the construction of Chile’s first European-style city, Santiago, in February 1541.

Less than a month later, Valdivia created a cabildo (governing council), which in turn, called upon Valdivia to make himself governor of Chile in the name of the king of Spain rather than as Pizarro’s lieutenant. After perfunctory objections, Valdivia agreed. Unfortunately for the Spaniards, on September 11, 1541, the Araucanian Indians (Southwestern South America)attacked Santiago and burned it to the ground.

The war for Chile would consume the remainder of Valdivia’s life. He spent the next years pushing south from Santiago, warring against the Araucanians, and establishing a number of fort towns including Concepcion, La Imperial (present-day Carahue), Valdivia, and Villarrica.

With the creation of each city, Valdivia handed out encomiendas to selected conquistadores, thereby granting them authority to collect tribute from the Indians in their jurisdiction and take charge of the process of Christianizing the Native Americans.

Religious orders were also granted encomiendas by the conquistador. Since the indigenous Chileans had little accumulated wealth, tribute typically took the form of forced labor in the mines or gold washings.

Not surprisingly, the Indians put up a fierce resistance to enslavement. In 1548, Valdivia received aid and reinforcements from Peru, raising the number of Spaniards in Chile to 500 men. It would not be enough, since the Spanish troops were stretched so thinly throughout the country.

On December 25, 1553, the Araucanians were under the command of Lautaro, a former groom of Valdivia’s who had acquired knowledge of Spanish tactics and weaknesses during his time as a slave. Lautaro lured Valdivia into a trap. The Araucanians defeated the Spaniards in the Battle of Tucapel, killing Valdivia and all 50 of the men who had accompanied him.

Although legend holds that the Indians captured Valdivia and poured molten gold down his throat in reference to the wealth that he so brutally sought, it is more likely that his decapitated head ended up on the point of an Araucanian lance. This was the Indians’ customary treatment of conquered enemies.

Following Valdivia’s death, most of the Spaniards fled southern Chile for Santiago. The Spanish remained a presence only at the fort of Valdivia. Chile remained in a constant state of war until the 17th century.

Born in Delhi on August 11, 1943, to an educated middle-class family, Pervez Musharraf immigrated with his family to Pakistan during the Indian partition later that decade. Musharraf’s education included enrollment at the Pakistan Military Academy, the Staff College in Quetta, and the National Defence College.

He rose very quickly through the Pakistani military ranks despite the fact that he and his family were not members of the Punjab upper class, which dominated the Pakistani officer corps. His military career began in 1964 with various commands that included artillery and infantry units and then leadership over commando units.

Musharraf graduated from the Royal College of Defence Studies in the United Kingdom before being named the director-general of the military by Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, and he participated in the Indo-Pakistani Wars of 1965 and 1971.

In 1998 Musharraf became the army chief two days after the resignation of General Jehangir Karamat, the first army chief of staff to ever step down. Some analysts suggested that the appointment of the non-Punjab Musharraf by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was designed to prevent him from becoming too powerful.

But Musharraf, along with other military officers, soon became frustrated with the prime minister’s diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis with India. A crisis that resulted would end Pakistan’s democratic experiment.

General Musharraf took over the government of Pakistan in a bloodless coup on October 12, 1999, and became the 12th president of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan on June 20, 2001. The coup began when Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif attempted to fire Musharraf and replace him with the director of the Pakistani Intelligence Services, or the ISI, Khwaja Ziauddin.

Out of the country when the crisis began, Musharraf immediately returned to Pakistan, and, with the support of senior military officials, Musharraf landed and assumed control of the government, ultimately exiling Sharif. He then suspended the national assembly.

In April 2002 Musharraf held a national referendum in order to legitimize his rule, which was extended for five years. The majority of Pakistani political parties, however, boycotted the election, and voter participation was believed to have been about 3 percent. In October 2002 general elections were held, and the pro-Musharraf PML-Q party won a number of seats.

On December 14, 2003, a bomb exploded just minutes after Musharraf’s motorcade crossed a bridge in Rawalpindi. Eleven days later another attempt to assassinate him resulted in the death of 16 people nearby. Musharraf temporarily broke the deadlock in December of 2004 in order to pass the Seventeenth Amendment, which legalized his 1999 coup.

In January 2004 another referendum extended his presidency until October 2007. Several significant issues marked Musharraf’s presidency. After the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States Musharraf allied with the United States in the War on Terrorism. Radicals within Pakistan continued to target him for assassination.

In November Musharraf declared emergency rule and dismissed the Supreme Court. He arrested opposition leaders and restricted media. In late November his new, personally appointed Supreme Court dropped all challenges to his legitimacy as president, and Musharraf renounced his military role.

On December 15, 2007, Musharraf ended the state of emergency, ahead of the scheduled January 8 elections. The December 27 assassination of Benazir Bhutto, however, intensified the opposition to Musharraf, and his party was soundly defeated in delayed parliamentary elections in February.
